25 Apr, 2008 11:00:55
April 25, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lanka is preparing an annual calendar of events in the island and is seeking information on events that are likely to interest visitors, the island's tourism promotion office said.
"Most are repeat visitors…look forward to witnessing and participating in local events," the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau said in a statement.

"These visitors seek to plan their holidays to coincide with happening events, and the proposed Sri Lanka Calendar of Events will be designed to assist them…"

"Its abundance of greenery, natural beauty, the warmth of the people and the rich cultural heritage draws many to the destination,"

Sri Lanka has an annual Kandy perahera, or procession which is related to the Temple of the Tooth, Vel festivals related to the Hindu religion as well as Christian and Muslim religious activities.

The Bureaus says it is also seeking information on sports and national festivals and art exhibitions.

The island also has events related to wild life including what is believed to be the largest Asian elephant gathering around Minneriya lake in August and migratory bird flocks that also fly in soon after.
