Apr 23, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s cabinet has given approval to implement the Bibile sugar development project with the participation of farmers from the Badulla and Ampara districts covering the cultivation of sugar cane for the production of sugar and cultivate mixed crops.
Each farmer in the area will be provided a block of land to the extent of 2.5 hectares thereby ensuring a sustainable source of income.

Cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senarathne said, each farmer family in the area could earn a monthly income of 60,000 rupees to 80,000 rupees through this project.

The cabinet proposal was made by Minister of Plantation Industry, Lakshman Kiriella.

The Ministry of Sugar Industry Development last year said that it plans to develop Kantale, Hingurana, Sevanagala and Pelwatta sugar industry plants with the view to increasing local production up to 40 percent of the annual sugar requirement of the country by 2020.
