May 10, 2015 (LBO) - Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena is scheduled to present the proposed 20th Amendment to the constitution at the all political party representatives' meeting to be held Monday (11), a government media report said.

“It will then be presented to the Cabinet of Ministers on May 13 and to Parliament on May 19,”

The proposed 20th Amendment will thereafter be sent to the Supreme Court for its determination, the news report said.

According to the proposed reforms in the 20 amendment, 196 members will be elected on a first-past-the-post system and a district-based proportional representation (PR) system allowing continued parliamentary representation for minor political parties,

The remaining 59 members will be from the National List.

The first-past-the-post (FPP) will also come into play with all electorate level winners entering Parliament. There will be some multi-member polling divisions returning two or three victors.

Earlier in April (28) Sri Lanka’s Parliament approved and passed the much awaited 19th amendment to the constitution which curtailed the powers of the all-powerful executive president with a two third majority.
