Sri Lanka’s open air zoo opens doors to public; entrance free from today to 01 May

Apr 17, 2015 (LBO) - Sri Lanka’s public will be given the opportunity of visiting its first open air zoo, adjoining the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawala free of charge from today until the 01st of next month, a government media report said.

“The public will be given the opportunity of visiting this zoo free of charge from today until the 01st of next month,” the report said.

“Sri Lanka’s second zoological gardens and the first open air zoo will be opened today and is part of another stage of the programme mooted throughout the island on behalf of the promotion of the tourism industry,”

“The Zoological Department in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports took the initiative of expediting the construction work of the Open Air Zoo in Pinnawala.”

The zoo is located adjacent to the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawala and spans 44 acres in area.

Sri Lanka has invested approximately 862 million rupees to build the zoo of which 488 million rupees were funded from the Treasury and the rest from the Zoological Development Fund, a statement said.

However, it has taken about 17 years to complete the construction of the zoo which commenced in 1998.
